Jose Cobian wasn’t a detective, not by a long shot—but he found himself playing the part in 2014 while he nosed through online forums run by Porsche enthusiasts living thousands of miles from his home in Puebla, Mexico. What he wanted to find, what he needed to find, was someone who could help him solve a mystery that had come to occupy a sizable amount of the real estate in his imagination.

The trouble began earlier that year, when his long-burning passion for vintage Porsches led him to buy a 1975 911 Turbo from an eccentric seller in the Netherlands. Everything about the car was a riddle—the features it had, and the ones it didn’t. Even the most accomplished Porsche experts were stumped by chassis number 0162, a 911 Turbo without a tail.

“It didn’t make any sense,” says Cobian, who was in his late twenties at the time. As he became more and more obsessed with discovering the mysterious 930’s backstory, he knew that he had to find the car’s original owner—an impulse that would lead him down a rabbit hole. For a young enthusiast obsessed with Porsche’s original 911 Turbo, it would prove a worthwhile pursuit.
